The Chicago Blackhawks have had their fair share of hockey greats stroll through the Windy City, but Patrick Kane is a player this generation will never forget. After bursting onto the scene as a rookie, winning the Calder Memorial Trophy, Kane helped the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup three times, and still ranks as the franchise’s second-leading scorer.

Yet, Kane’s time with the Blackhawks came to an end during last year’s trade deadline when Chicago opted to embrace their rebuilding effort. Suddenly, a 16-year partnership came to an end, with Kane shipped to the New York Rangers.

Once he rehabbed from offseason hip surgery, Kane signed a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings. On Sunday night, Kane returned to the United Center, and he gave all Blackhawks fans in attendance a moment they’ll never forget.

The Red Wings and Blackhawks were entrenched in a 2-2 game in overtime when Kane found himself on a breakaway with nothing but open ice and Blackhawks goalie Petr Mrazek ahead of him.

Once it came time to deliver, Kane confused his opponent and found the open spot just above Mrazek’s left shoulder for the game-winning goal. What happened afterward was pure pandemonium at the United Center, with fans both heartbroken and in awe of their former superstar.

While he’s had an incredible career, this has to rank high on Kane’s list of his favorite goals. Kane’s goal is his 12th in just 27 games played this season and the 447th of the four-time All-Star’s career.

Despite being the visiting team that just handed the home squad a loss, fans in attendance couldn’t help but give Kane a standing ovation for his stunning performance, which also included an assist.
