Panthers to start Kyle Allen over Cam Newton Week 9

Coming off a blowout 51-13 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, some figured that the Carolina Panthers would turn back to Cam Newton.

At least for one more week, that’s not going to be the case. Panthers head coach Ron Rivera announced on Monday that second-year quarterback Kyle Allen will start next week against the Tennessee Titans.

Allen has started each of the past five games, going 4-1 in the process. He had yet to throw an interception on the season prior to being picked off three times on Sunday.

This is a clear indication that Cam Newton simply is not ready to return. He’s been out since suffering a Lisfranc injury back in Week 2.

As it relates to Allen, Sunday’s game should be taken with a grain of salt. He was going up against an historical 49ers pass defense that became the first team since the 1970s to yield 100 or fewer net passing yards in four consecutive games.

Carolina has a much better matchup against the Titans this week.
