For the first time since undergoing surgery on his throwing shoulder shortly after the 2018 season, former NFL MVP Cam Newton will be tossing the ball around practice.
The Carolina Panthers announced that Newton will take part in their three-day mandatory minicamp starting Tuesday. Not only that, he will actually throw the football.
“Newton is scheduled to throw during all quarterback drills. He’ll execute a limited number of throws to stationary targets,” the team announced Saturday, via its official website. “It’s still unclear when Newton will start participating in team drills.”
This is no small thing. Newton being able to take this next step in his return to the gridiron so early in the offseason is a huge deal. It likely means he’ll be a full go for training camp.
More so than potentially any other team outside of New England and New Orleans, the Panthers rely on their quarterback to remain relevant. Sure they’ve added talent elsewhere this offseason, but it’s still all about Newton.
We can expect all eyes to be on Newton when he takes to the field on Tuesday. After all, it was just a little while ago that there was no timetable for Newton’s return to thowing.
