The Carolina Panthers will have at least two of their quarterbacks from a season ago back on the roster under first-year head coach Matt Rhule.

It might not be who you expect. While the Cam Newton situation has yet to play out, Carolina announced that it has signed young signal caller Kyle Allen to a one-year extension. Allen, 24, was set to become an exclusive-rights free agent at the start of the new league year next week.

The former Texas A&M standout played pretty good football in Newton’s stead last season, completing 62% of his passes for 3,322 yards with 17 touchdowns and 16 interceptions in 13 games (12) starts. Terms of the deal are not yet known.

This could signal that Carolina will indeed move on from Newton. He was just seen throwing a football after undergoing both shoulder and Lisfranc surgeries over the past year-plus.

The former league MVP has been bandied about as a trade chip heading into the start of free agency. With Allen and 2019 draft pick, Will Grier, guaranteed roster sports for next season, Newton looks to be the odd-man out.
