Carolina Panthers Pro Bowl safety Eric Reid, a good friend of free-agent quarterback Colin Kaepernick, attended the highly publicized workout in Atlanta on Saturday.
Following Carolina’s blowout loss to the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday, Reid went on record campaigning for the quarterback-needy team to sign Kaepernick.
Despite there being a fit here, Panthers owner David Tepper indicated on Monday that the team is not interested in any veteran quarterback. That includes Mr. Kaepernick.
It’s also why the team did not have anyone from the personnel or scouting department on hand to attend the workout.
This entire Kaepernick drama took on a new meaning Saturday when the embattled free agent moved his workout from the Falcons’ practice facility to another location. This was due to a rift between Kaepernick’s camp and the NFL.
Out of football since starting the national anthem protests back in 2016, it doesn’t look like this workout has moved the needle for Kaepernick. Carolina is one of the teams that have been bandied about the most.
That has to do with Tepper’s ant-Trump stance and more liberal political philosophy compared to other owners around the league.
As it relates to Carolina, Cam Newton is currently on injured reserve with a Lisfranc injury. Second-year quarterback Kyle Allen is coming off a four-interception performance in Sunday’s loss to Atlanta.
While there seems to be a fit for the 5-5 Panthers, they are now on record indicating no real interest in signing Kaepernick. Other teams will likely follow suit here soon.
