After suffering a foot injury in his 2019 debut then leaving the stadium in a walking boot, it appears the Carolina Panthers can breathe a sigh of relief regarding Cam Newton’s health.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the team diagnosed him with a mid-foot sprain following multiple tests and general manager Marty Hurney is “cautiously optimistic” that Newton will play in the regular-season opener.
It’s outstanding news for Carolina given Newton’s histories of injuries and the team’s current depth behind him. Kyle Allen is unproven at the NFL level and 2019 third-round pick Will Grier has struggled throughout the preseason.
Newton’s mobility might be limited at the start of the season, which would be an obvious limitation given his unique skills. Fortunately for Carolina, Newton’s arm strength is reportedly better than it was in 2018.
Entering his age-30 season with perhaps the best supporting cast and offensive line in years, this could be a big year for Newton if he avoids further injury.
