It’s not a well kept secret that the San Diego Padres have one of the best farm systems in baseball. Up until recently, they have not used these riches in their system to acquire proven talent.

With the MLB trade deadline set to come and go on Tuesday, the Padres are reportedly interested in landing New York Mets ace Noah Syndergaard. In fact, one recent report suggests that New York might be willing to move him to Southern California.

According to this note from Jon Morosi of MLB.com, those around the league believe that San Diego is in the best position to land Syndergaard.

On the surface, this wouldn’t seem to make a whole lot of sense. The Padres are currently in last place at 48-55 on the season, seven games out of the final wild card spot.

Though, this move would also be done with 2020 in mind. Syndergaard, 26, is arbitration eligible for the next two seasons. This would make him a long-term option to team up with impressive youngster Chris Paddack in the rotation.

Any move to acquire Syndergaard would come at an extreme cost, potentially including top prospect MacKenzie Gore.
