Packers become initial team to sign first-round pick

Earlier on Thursday the Minnesota Vikings inked second-round pick Irv Smith Jr. to his rookie deal.

More so than in any previous year, it seems that rookies are signing their deals earlier than expected.

That now includes Green Bay Packers first-round pick, safety Darnell Savage. The team has reportedly inked the 21st overall pick to his rookie deal.

It can’t hurt to get these youngsters locked up this close to the draft. A surprise first-round pick of the Packers late last month, Savage will need time to get accustomed to Mike Pettine’s defense.

The 5-foot-11 defensive back recorded 38 tackles and four interceptions with Maryland last season.
