Jordan Lyles worked out of trouble across six innings and the Baltimore Orioles defeated the visiting Boston Red Sox 9-5 on Sunday.
Rougned Odor homered and the light-hitting Orioles racked up 13 hits.
The Orioles have won back-to-back games for just the second time this season, this time following a five-game losing streak. Lyles struck out six, but he didn’t return after a rain delay of more than 90 minutes in the bottom of the sixth.
The Red Sox lost for the third time in their last four games, nearly failing to score more than one run in any of those setbacks until J.D. Martinez’s grand slam in the ninth. Starting pitcher Nick Pivetta (0-4) took the loss.
Lyles (2-2) gave up seven hits, three walks and hit a batter in his first five innings. Yet the Red Sox stranded nine runners, letting him escape jams.
Still, Boston took a 1-0 lead in the fifth when Xander Bogaerts led off with a double and eventually scored on Franchy Cordero’s sacrifice fly.
The Orioles were quick to respond, with the first three batters in the bottom of the inning reaching base. That sequence was capped by Tyler Nevin’s two-run single.
Later in the inning, Anthony Santander’s sacrifice fly made it 3-1.
Odor’s first home run of the season led off the bottom of the sixth with a blast to right field in the rain off Kutter Crawford. After one more batter, the game entered the delay.
The Orioles tacked on five more runs in the sixth after the delay. Jorge Mateo had a two-run double, Santander belted a two-run single and Ryan Mountcastle provided a run-scoring single.
Those hits contributed to a season-high run total. Baltimore hadn’t scored more than five runs in any of its previous seven victories this season.
Martinez finished with three hits, while Rafael Devers and Jaylin Davis, an outfielder in first game with the Red Sox since he was claimed off waivers from San Francisco a few days earlier, both had two hits for Boston.
