Olympics roundup: Italian Lamont Marcell Jacobs wins 100-meter race in Tokyo

The world has a new fastest man.

Italian Lamont Marcell Jacobs won the men’s 100-meter race in a time of 9.80 seconds, well off of Usain Bolt’s world record time of 9.58, on Sunday at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo. American Fred Kerley was second at 9.84, with Canadian Andre de Grasse third at 9.89.

American champion and race favorite Trayvon Bromell failed to qualify for the finals after posting a 10.00 time in the semifinals.

Kerley’s silver medal was one of 13 won by the U.S. on Sunday, moving Team USA into first place in the overall medal standings with 59. China is second with 51, followed by Russia Olympic Committee (44) Great Britain (32), and Japan and Australia (tied at 31).

The Chinese retained the lead in gold medals with 24. Rounding out the top five are the United States (20), Japan (17), Australia (14) and ROC (12).
