The new year might have started out with multiple NFL teams hoping to land Oklahoma Sooners head coach Lincoln Riley.
But it didn’t take long for Riley to tell said teams that he plans on remaining in Norman over the long haul. The young head coach signed an extension with Oklahoma, the program announced on New Year’s Day.
“We felt it important to extend and amend Lincoln’s contract at this time as we want him at the University of Oklahoma for a long time,” Oklahoma president James Gallogly said, via the program’s official website. “He is a great coach and role model for our student-athletes. His record of success speaks for itself.”
Riley, 35, has led Oklahoma to the College Football Playoff in each of his first two seasons as the team’s head coach — posting a 24-4 record in the process. He’s also overseen the past two Heisman winners in that if Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray.
Multiple NFL teams were said to have interest in Riley prior to him signing this extension. Said teams will have to wait at least a bit longer to court him.
