The Oakland Athletics are now in the midst of their final season in that city after Thursday’s big news.

Local Sacramento media personality David Weiglein — better known as Carmichael Dave — reported on Wednesday that the A’s and California’s capital city would make an announcement on temporary relocation either Thursday or Friday.

That happened on Thursday with a statement from the organization that they will play in Sacramento starting next season and moving through the 2027 campaign.

“We look forward to making Sutter Health Park our home through our move to Las Vegas,” embattled A’s owner John Fisher said in a statement. “We extend our appreciation to the Kings and the city of West Sacramento for hosting the A’s while we work to complete our new ballpark in Las Vegas.”

Owner John Fisher and Co. had been in conversations with the city of Oakland about extending their lease at the Coliseum. Like talks between these two sides over the past several years, nothing came to fruition on that end.

The A’s will play their home games inside Sutter Health Park in California’s capital city. It’s currently the home of the Triple-A Sacramento Rivercats and boasts a capacity of 14,014.

The smallish nature of this stadium is unlikely to matter. Including Wednesday’s shutout loss to the Boston Red Sox, these A’s are averaging 6,438 fans in their six homes games to open the 2024 MLB season. Attendance has largely been an issue due to both the run-down Oakland Coliseum and the poor product Fisher has fielded. Add in imminent relocation, and that’s been taken to a whole new level recently.

As for Vegas, things are trending in the direction of that actually happening. Tropicana is in the process of being torn down. It’s the projected new site of the A’s stadium after Nevada state leaders and MLB owners approved relocation last year.

The A’s have played in Oakland since their relocation from Kansas City back in 1968. Their time in Northern California included four World Series title. It certainly is a bitter day for MLB fans in the Bay Area.
