Defenseman Vincent Iorio was claimed by the San Jose Sharks on Thursday. The news comes a day after the Washington Capitals placed Iorio on waivers.

The Capitals had to make room for blueliner Dylan McIlrath who was coming off of injured reserve. Iorio was placed on waivers, which allowed McIlrath to become Washington’s eighth defenseman.

This is a huge loss considering Iorio spent a lot of time within the organization. The 22-year-old had an impressive training camp and preseason, as he made the opening night roster.

Iorio was selected in the second round of the 2021 NHL Draft, having been considered one of the top defensive prospects. He played a majority of his tenure with the AHL’s Hershey Bears, where he won back-to-back Calder Cups in 2023 and 2024.

Iorio will now get a chance to shine out west with the Sharks organization.
