The Senators capped off a perfect weekend today with a 7-4 win over the San Jose Sharks. Talk about a vastly different type of game from yesterday’s where the Sens were able to shutout the Anaheim Ducks 2-0. Today, they had to come from behind three different times and ended up pulling away in the third as the teams combined for 11 goals. Let’s dive into the details.

Zetterlund’s Strong Showing

Two things can be true. On the one hand, it’s disappointing that Zetterlund has mainly been a fourth line player for the Senators. On the other, it shows how deep the Senators are. Today, Zetterlund and the fourth line came up big, with Zetterlund scoring a goal, assisting on another, and registering five hits. Warren Foegele, his linemate, also scored a goal and an assist. Those are players that have mainly been middle six players before arriving in Ottawa. To have them as the Senators fourth line wingers is a luxury.

Batherson Stays Hot

This has to be the strangest two goal game of Batherson’s career. The first was on a pass that Sharks d-man Mario Ferraro put in his own net. The second was off Batherson’s shoulder, from a Zub shot that looked to be going wide. That ended up as the game winner. That gives Batherson 27 goals, one off his career high set in 2023-24. In his last eight games, Batherson has scored two goals four times.

Additional Notes

A quick note on the Sharks- they seem to have a lot of players with jersey numbers in the 70’s. How often will you see an offensive game like this where Stützle is held off the scoresheet? He had a breakaway chance late in the second but couldn’t beat Laurent Brossoit. Here are the other Senators that scored two points today: Brady Tkachuk, Artem Zub, and Michael Amadio. The Senators gave up 13 first period shots. Then, they gave up just 10 in the last two periods combined. Next up for the Sens, a road game on Wednesday, against the Washington Capitals.
