There’s no doubt about it that New York Islanders netminder Ilya Sorokin will get votes for the Vezina Trophy comes season’s end. The 26-year-old, second-year NHLer has been the ‘saving grace’ if you will for the New York Islanders.
With a back-to-back coming Thursday and Friday, Ilya Sorokin will likely make one final start in a season where he’s showcased the ability to not only be a clear-cut number one netminder at the NHL level but a goaltender that will be vying for a Vezina trophy each and every year.
He’s just that good. And he has shown his skillsets in a season where the New York Islanders in front of him, was not that good.
On Tuesday night, Sorokin made his 51st start of the season as he denied 31 of 32 shots that came his way for his 26th win of the season. On the year, he is 26-17-8, with a .927 SV% and a 2.35 GAA, with seven shutouts.
If it was not for Ilya Shesterkin, the goaltender manning the pipes over on Broadway with the New York Rangers, Ilya Sorokin is likely your 2022 Vezina Trophy winner. Sorokin’s .927 SV% is second to Shersterkin’s .935 SV%, his GAA of 2.35 is fourth in the NHL, and his seven shutouts ranks second in the NHL behind Calgary Flames netminder Jacob Markstrom.
