The New York Islanders took a step back on Sunday, as they were defeated by the Montreal Canadiens, 3-2 in a shootout. When the Islanders were in Buffalo on Tuesday, I was there. It was my first travel day and the hockey gods had some fun with me. Jack Eichel scored his first goal as a member of the Vegas Golden Knights.

The New York Islanders, after an impressive win over the Boston Bruins on Thursday, took a step back as they fell 3-2 to the Montreal Canadiens in a shootout on Sunday. The Islanders move to 18-20-7 on the season, 10-10-4 on home ice. Here’s how it happened with postgame quotes. (NYI Hockey Now)
This past Tuesday, I traveled for the first time to cover the New York Islanders for their Feb. 15 contest against the Buffalo Sabres. With my brother Jamie living in Buffalo, I could kill two birds with one stone and get to see him. He was fine. The day, however…(NYI Hockey Now)

Nobody would exactly call it a slump because Boston Bruins winger David Pastrnak had scored 16 goals over the previous 16 games, but it was also clear Pasta wasn’t his best self while going scoreless in four games after both Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand exited the lineup. Some of it was undoubtedly about opponents focusing all their attention on No. 88 with Bergeron injured and Marchand suspended, and some of it was probably about Pastrnak putting undue pressure on himself to carry things himself without his Perfection Line buddies around. The Pittsburgh Penguins (31-13-8) again looked sloppy for much of the first 30 minutes. The Carolina Hurricanes (34-11-4) capitalized on giveaways and earned more takeaways. The Penguins rallied but Carolina’s chances were too many and the Penguins mistakes too great. Carolina beat the Penguins 4-3 at PPG Paints Arena on Sunday afternoon. (Pittsburgh Hockey Now)
Because of an injury to Ryan Ellis, defenseman Justin Braun has spent most of the season on the Philadelphia Flyers’ top pairing and has done an admirable job. Now 35, Braun could soon be headed elsewhere because the Flyers are out of the playoff picture, and his solid play could help a contender, especially on a team looking for a veteran righthanded-shooting defenseman who can solidify the third pairing. Jack Eichel has found twine for the first time as a member of the Vegas Golden Knights, and former Washington Capitals forward Chandler Stephenson helped make it all happen. Eichel made a great pass to Stephenson in front, and instead of shooting, Stephenson wrapped around the net. He caught Eichel charging to the net and dished a backhander to set up Eichel. He put the puck past James Reimer for his first goal since Jan. 28, 2021 and make it 2-0 for Vegas over the San Jose Sharks. (Washington Hockey Now)
