The New york Islanders dropped their third game in their first four games of the season in a 3-2 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets. New York is 1-2-1 on the season.

How it Happened: Patrik Laine scored 1:49 into the overtime period to lead Columbus to a 3-2 win over the Islanders. A quick wrister from Laine got by Islanders starter Ilya Sorokin in what was his third loss of the year.

The Islanders let a 1-0 lead slip away late in the second period when a 33-second span flipped the game on its head. An ill timed penalty by Casey Cizikas gave Columbus their fourth power play of the game and allowed Boon Jenner to deflect a shot from the high slot to even the score at one. Seconds later as the Islanders collapsed into the corner, Columbus was able to move the puck to Cole Sillinger for the first goal of his NHL career.

The Islanders did respond in the third period to tie the game at two off an impressive solo effort from Mathew Barzal. The New York Islanders star took a pass from Noah Dobson and skated into the slot before firing a wrist shot past Elvis Merzlikins at the 5:03 mark of the third.

Scott Mayfield scored the game’s opening goal 10:35 into the second period after pinching along the boards and then driving towards the net. Ilya Sorokin made 29 saves in the loss.

Every Second Counts: It will be the 33 seconds that haunt the New York Islanders on their flight to Arizona. After playing a decent 18 minutes in the second period, it was a disastrous 33 seconds that ended up costing the Islanders the game.
