In his first regular season on the island, Sorokin put together a strong campaign. In 22 games, the 26-year old posted a 13-6-3 record, with a 2.17 GAA and a .918 SV%. Add three shutouts to go along with those solid numbers.
The “White Whale” as he is referred to by the Islander faithful showed his worth in the postseason. He was the prime reason why the Islanders were able to take down the Pittsburgh Penguins in six games, coming through with clutch saves more times than not.
In seven postseason appearances, Sorokin recorded a 2.79 GAA with a .922 SV%. He was 4-1 in the five games he started.
It was not an easy transition for the Russian star in his first few outings at the NHL level. Sorokin seemed lost, losing his first three outings.
But the more minutes he received, the more confident he got. And the more the Islander fans saw the potential Sorokin had, not only to be a number one goaltender for years to come, but an elite goaltender in the NHL.
