There’s no secret that Islanders’ offense runs through Mathew Barzal. But the inability to find a constant winger for he and Anders Lee has hurt the Islanders’ ability for offensive consistency. And it’s something that Barzal spoke about following Monday’s practice.
“I would love some concrete chemistry with somebody. Rotating guys in and out sometimes is hard to get that chemistry,” Barzal said.”In saying that, I pride myself on being a guy that can play with anyone.”
This issue of not having a concrete line is something new to this season. Over the last three seasons, Barzal had Jordan Eberle on his right side with Lee on his left. No one this season who has tried out in Eberle’s old spot has been able to stick.
And while Trotz has kept the duo of Anders Lee and Barzal together during his tenure on the island for the most part (Lee’s injuries, changes here and there), it may be time for the two to be separated.
Trotz gave his reason as to why, which I included in my post-Monday practice piece.
The priority of conversations have been regarding who will be on Barzal’s left going forward. But an important conversation not being had is the best spot for Anders Lee.
The first part is dissecting what kind of players Lee needs around him.
