The New Jersey Devils have made their first round of cuts on Monday, and Luke Hughes still isn’t under contract.

There was one small update on the latter, and it isn’t very encouraging. More on that below.

Plus, the details on whom the Devils cut, and who is waiver exempt/eligible.

Plus, a young forward is being shopped out of Chicago, and Macklin Celebrini’s new stall-mate.

Let’s do that hockey.

Devils Trade Rumors & News

New Jersey Hockey Now: The Devils reduced their roster size yesterday from 61 to 45, cutting 16 players in training camp. There weren’t any surprises, but the Devils did have one or two hopefuls head to their American Hockey League affiliate for the opening of their training camp.

More NJHN: And although those cuts were made, the Devils still have decisions to make. Some players who remain in training camp require waivers. Others don’t. Here’s your primer, so you know who is at risk to be snatched up in the next round of cuts, and who is exempt.

Sportsnet: On the latest episode of 32 Thoughts Podcast, Elliotte Friedman has a small update on Luke Hughes’ contract negotiations. He couldn’t offer much, and stressed he wanted to be careful with what he said because things can change with just one phone call (see Mason McTavish), but the word is there is “still work to be done.”

Make of that what you will.

NHL Trade Talk, News, & National Hockey Now

San Jose Hockey Now: Macklin Celebrini is certainly the future of the San Jose Sharks. The future superstar forward is certainly sitting next to the likes of Tyler Toffoli or Jeff Skinner, veteran forwards who have thus far had successful careers, right? Naw. He’s sitting next to Ryan Reaves, who has been successful as well, but in a MUCH different way. So, what can Celebrini gain from one of the NHLs toughest? (+)

The Athletic ($): Here’s an interesting one. The Chicago Blackhawks are reportedly shopping 2020 first-round pick, Lukas Reichel. The 23-year old is talented, but hasn’t quite figured it out in The Windy City. So, where will he be next week?
