Tuesday night’s tilt between the New Jersey Devils and Colorado Avalanche got quite physical.

Former Devil, Miles Wood, got the turned-up physicality started when he laid a big check on New Jersey defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler.

Later, New Jersey native and Avalanche forward Ross Colton dealt a big check to rookie defenseman Luke Hughes. Devils forward Timo Meier took exception and addressed the Colorado forward. Colton’s response to Meier was a cross-check to the face.

According to the NHL PR, “Colton has been fined $5,000, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for cross-checking New Jersey Devils forward Timo Meier during NHL Game No. 188 in Colorado on Tuesday, Nov. 7, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.”

Colton was assessed a major penalty and game misconduct for the infraction.
