NHL power rankings: montreal canadiens, cole caufield
Dan Hamilton-USA TODAY Sports

There’s no doubt Montreal Canadiens forward Cole Caufield is appreciated at the Bell Centre, a result of his affinity for scoring big goals at crucial moments.

There’s no further evidence needed than his recent streak, which has featured three game-winning goals, including his overtime marker versus the Seattle Kraken on Tuesday night. Caufield has now scored 11 overtime goals for the Canadiens during his career, a franchise record.

And yet, it seems that he’s still being judged by many as a diminutive forward, rather than one of the most efficient goalscorers in the NHL.

A recent 2026 Team USA Olympic roster projection produced by the NHL omitted Caufield, despite the fact that he’s currently tied for first in the league in goals scored, with 9.

Cole Caufield By The Numbers

The main issue raised when discussing Caufield‘s potential impact on Team USA’s Olympic lineup is that he’s a one-dimensional player, and he would not be a good fit unless he’s used in the team’s top six.

Rather than discussing hypotheticals based on empty rhetoric, we’re going to delve into the numbers to paint a clearer picture of Caufield’s value.

30 – Caufield has scored 30 goals at 5v5 since 2024-25, the second-most among all NHL players. To give you an idea of how impressive he’s been, Brady Tkachuk, considered a lock for the American roster, scored 11 goals at 5v5 in that same stretch. This should be enough to convince anyone that he’s clearly able to make a significant impact beyond playing 3v3 hockey in overtime.

60.9 – We tend to assume Caufield is a defensive liability, but he’s currently part of one of the most dominant lines in the league. Caufield, along with Nick Suzuki and Juraj Slafkovsky, have controlled almost 61 percent of the expected goals this season. In other words, he doesn’t have to spend much time defending, because his line drives the offence like few others in the league.

18 – Even though scoring goals is clearly an area of strength, it’s worth noting Caufield has registered 18 primary assists since 2024-25, good for 30th overall in the NHL at 5v5.

Brass Tacks

Without trying to come off as overly defensive, it’s ridiculous that Caufield is considered a bubble player, rather than a lock, because the numbers clearly suggest that perception aside, Caufield is one of the best goalscorers in the league, which automatically makes him one of the most valuable Americans in the NHL.

The argument that he holds no value beyond the top six is inherently flawed, as the facts point to Caufield being overqualified to play heavy minutes for Team USA.

It remains to be seen if USA Hockey shares the same tired opinion, but they’d be wise to seriously consider Caufield as a core player if they’re intent on winning their first Olympic medal since 2010.
