Montreal Canadiens News And Notes
- ICYMI: Fresh off a playoff elimination, it may not feel like the Habs are in an encouraging situation, but all things considered, their future is incredibly bright. They’re the youngest team in the league, and they’re still not done rebuilding. [Canadiens Evolution: Silver Linings Impossible To Ignore]
- Technically, the Habs have plenty of time to sign Ivan Demidov to a contract extension. However, there’s a particular date that looms large when discussing his next deal. [Finding Comparable Contracts For Upcoming Demidov Extension]
- Lane Hutson had nothing but great things to say about his young teammate.

“He’s going to be dangerous, for sure. Just his mentality, the way he works. Just being around him is so fun because it just brings more out of me.” pic.twitter.com/pGK0kZ0J7O
- Depending on a few different factors, the Habs should have enough cap space heading into 2026-27 to acquire at least one top-tier player. This depends on whether or not they can find a new home for Brendan Gallagher in the near future. [Canadiens Salary Cap Projection: Available Funds For Trades]
- Speaking of Gallagher, as expected, it seems like the Canadiens will do right by their longtime veteran. They want to find him a team that will use him throughout the season, rather than just a team willing to absorb his cap hit for other reasons.
Dreger reported on Insider Trading the Canadiens want to do right by Brendan Gallagher, so that means not only finding the right team to take him, but also where Gallagher can be a useful day-by-day fit.

- The Canadiens had former netminder Jaroslav Halak introduce the team during the playoffs, but Carey Price was nowhere to be found. It turns out, Price was set to be the torch-bearer if the Canadiens had continued their impressive playoff push.

- Another former Canadiens netminder hit the news. Patrick Roy is apparently in the running for the head coach job with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Considering his fiery approach, not to mention the intensive media coverage in Toronto, I see this as nothing but pure entertainment for Habs fans.

- The Habs will trade Brendan Gallagher, but the idea that they’ll have to pay an arm and a leg to move him is flawed. We evaluated his trade value, as well as a few potential NHL trade partners for the Canadiens. [Canadiens Analysis: NHL Trade Partners For Gallagher Deal]
- The Canadiens also gave Gallagher permission to enter into discussions with other teams, to potentially facilitate a move.
Brendan Gallagher’s agent Gerry Johansson has permission from Montreal to help facilitate a trade.

- Our Montreal Canadiens player grades are underway, with newcomer Alexandre Texier leading the charge. When the Habs signed Texier, the expectations were quite low, given his recent history. Not only did he overdeliver, he actually produced better underlying numbers than Juraj Slafkovsky in his time with the first line. [Canadiens Player Grades: Texier Surprised With Excellent Value]
- Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki had nothing but great things to say about his rookie teammate, Ivan Demidov.
Habs captain Nick Suzuki on Ivan Demidov:

“I think he’s definitely a team-first guy. He might’ve been one of the more pissed off guys when we lost (in the ECF), so he’s hungry. He wants it…” pic.twitter.com/q2IVEBWa63
- “If you’re not fired by the summer, you need to honour this trade”. Canadiens general manager Kent Hughes was reportedly furious at former Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving due to a failed trade-deadline deal that included Matthew Knies. [Canadiens Hughes Berated Leafs GM For Failed Knies Trade]
- There was some excellent news on Friday, as both Cole Caufield and Nick Suzuki took home impressive individual awards. Suzuki took home the Selke Trophy as the league’s top defensive forward, while Caufield was given the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy. It’s a good reminder that the best is yet to come for the youngest team in the NHL. [Canadiens Forwards Suzuki And Caufield Capture Impressive Awards]
- Seeing as he’s the man of the hour, we analyzed Suzuki’s season for our player grades. All things considered, it was easily an A+ season for the team’s most important forward. Not only did he score over 100 points, he took part in endless plays that helped his team win, without necessarily registering his name on the scoresheet. [Canadiens Player Grades: Suzuki Is Excellence Personified]
- Improving every season is Suzuki’s calling card, but it’s starting to become difficult given his evolution. That being said, Suzuki suggests there’s plenty left to work on before he’ll be satisfied with his results.
Can Nick Suzuki top a 101-point, Selke-winning season? He believes so…

“I feel like there’s lots of things to still work on individually and as a team," he said. "Ultimately, you want to be the team still playing and have a chance to win the Cup, so I think there’s a lot more…
