The Montreal Canadiens have not been eliminated from the 2026 NHL Playoffs, though Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final served as a good barometer to evaluate their progress over the course of the last few seasons.
And though the Habs should be beaming with confidence given the big picture, there are important lessons to be learned against a talented opponent such as the Carolina Hurricanes.
Seeing The Forest For The Trees
The Canadiens are a good team.
The Hurricanes are a great team.
The difference between the two may seem relatively negligible on paper, but on the ice, it’s a chasmic gap that leaves a team such as the Habs with no margin for error.
And given how well the Hurricanes have performed in the playoffs, it may seem that they’ve always been a dominant presence, but nothing could be further from the truth.
Between 2009 and 2018, the Hurricanes failed to qualify for the playoffs.
From 2018 to 2025, they were unceremoniously bounced from the playoffs after reaching the second round, or the Conference Final.
In fact, prior to facing the Canadiens, the Hurricanes had produced a 1-12 record in their previous three conference final appearances.
They, too, underwent the frustrating, but illuminating process of being humiliated in the playoffs by teams that already understood what it took to win Lord Stanley’s Grail.
It takes luck, hard work, determination, luck, consistent effort, luck, chemistry, luck, and most importantly, every player must row in the same direction.
Oh, and it takes a little luck, but I digress.
The road to success is often intertwined with avenue of loss, providing the underdog team with invaluable experience in a very difficult situation.
The type of experience that reminds you of the difference between performing in the regular season, and thriving in the playoffs.
Montreal’s top players will have to find another gear, their coach will be forced to adapt to new situations, and management’s patience will be tested as fan angst grows.
However, it’s important to remember that the Montreal Canadiens are well ahead of schedule when analyzing their long-term rebuild plans.
Very few franchises have managed to reach the Eastern Conference Final just four years after starting their rebuild in earnest.
Maintaining focus on the grand plan, while acknowledging there are many lessons left to be absorbed, is exactly what the doctor ordered for the youngest team in the NHL.
