NHL: Carolina Hurricanes at Vancouver Canucks

The Carolina Hurricanes have the most points in the Eastern Conference heading into the NHL trade deadline on Friday. Carolina has been strong throughout the 2025-26 NHL season, but it still has needs, such as an elite second-line center behind Sebastian Aho. In fact, the Hurricanes have been predicted to acquire one this week.

Carolina has been predicted to acquire Vancouver Canucks center Elias Pettersson by The Athletic’s Cory Lavalette. Pettersson, who has been subject to criticism around Vancouver, could be traded despite his $11.6 million camp hit. In 2025-26, the 27-year-old center has 35 points in 52 games.

The Hurricanes could use a scoring boost, and if Pettersson returned to his 30-plus goal form, it would give the team a significant offensive addition. The Canucks sit at the bottom of the NHL and it doesn’t seem like Pettersson is a long-term fit in Vancouver, even with his contract going through the 2021-32 season.

Before signing an extension, Pettersson scored 32-plus goals in three straight seasons with a high of 102 points in 2022-23. The Vancouver center thrived when it was a playoff caliber team and a change of scenery is necessary. What could be better than the top team in the Eastern Conference?

The Canucks will likely want a big haul for Pettersson despite the drama around the organization. It would be a major commitment for Carolina, but Pettersson could take the team to the next level. Either way, the Hurricanes figure to be active at the NHL trade deadline, whether Pettersson is the answer or not.
