The St. Louis Blues and Buffalo Sabres are working on a trade that would send shockwaves throughout the NHL. Trade talks between the Blues are Sabres involving Robert Thomas are “heating up,” as reported by TSN’s Darren Dreger. St. Louis is serious about trading Thomas after weeks of speculation.

Buffalo has been viewed as a “dark horse team” for the Blues center around the NHL, as reported by The Athletic’s Chris Johnston. Other teams have also been connected to Thomas, such as the Utah Mammoth and Boston Bruins. As of now, the Sabres could be nearing a trade for one of the best NHL players on the block.

The 26-year-old center would ignite Buffalo’s offense, giving the team a better chance at making the Stanley Cup playoffs. After years of selling off elite players, Buffalo could be on the opposite side of the transaction. After all, Thomas has been an 80-point player over the last two seasons, scoring at least 21 goals over that stretch.

St. Louis figures to receive a massive haul for Thomas, possibly including multiple first-round picks and prospects. The St. Louis center moving to Buffalo would likely open the floodgates of NHL trades, with teams in the Eastern Conference scrambling to respond. However, nothing is pending at this time.

Thomas has 12 goals and 35 points through 43 games this season, as the Blues look to sell ahead of the NHL trade deadline. The St. Louis center is likely to be traded over the next few days, and the Sabres are heavily in the mix. If Buffalo can get this deal across the finish line, it could be the catalyst to ending a 14-year playoff draught.
