The Washington Commanders have been busy, trimming some of the fat from the roster before free agency kicks off on March 9. Last week, the Commanders released starting center Tyler Biadasz from the roster, and he was a one-time Pro Bowler. But Biadasz’s departure was simply the beginning.

On Monday, ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter revealed that the Commanders are planning to release four-time Pro Bowl cornerback Marshon Lattimore. Releasing Lattimore from the roster clears roughly $18.5 million in cap space.

The Commanders traded for Lattimore when they needed a boost to their secondary. Washington felt like they were possibly just a piece or two away from a Super Bowl run, and they felt like trading for Lattimore would help them capitalize on a strong rookie season from Jayden Daniels. The Commanders did end up reaching the NFC Conference Championship, but Lattimore made it through just nine games in 2025.

Now set to turn 30 before the 2026 season kicks off, Lattimore will have an early chance at gauging his market. Yet, he hasn’t had a season with multiple interceptions since 2021, the last time he earned Pro Bowl honors. After grading 96th among 114 cornerbacks rated by Pro Football Focus in 2025, it’s not hard to see why the Commanders wouldn’t want to pay nearly $20 million for a player whose star status has faded.

Still, after showing the ability to play at a very high level, it shouldn’t take long for Lattimore to find a new team later this offseason.
