On Wednesday, the Washington Commanders unveiled all-new jerseys ahead of the 2025-26 NFL season. What’s even more interesting is that their new jerseys look a lot like their old jerseys, when they were known by a different name.

Another notable factor was how the Commanders’ social media page worded one of their tweets, where Washington wrote, “History doesn’t fade…it fuels the future.”

The overall vibe has caused some, like Pro Football Talk’s NFL insider Mike Florio to declare that the team may be “laying the foundation for a potential return to their old name.”

“In this case, the partial embrace of history will naturally fuel speculation and/or fascination regarding whether a change is coming. Especially since the new uniforms — which look exactly like the Super Bowl-era uniforms but for the “W” in place of the abandoned logo — arrived only days after President Trump made his strongest statement yet regarding his belief that the former name should be the current name of the team.”

Years ago, when the Commanders were masquerading as the Washington Football Team, it seemed unfathomable that there would ever be a discussion to return to the old football team name in D.C. Yet, some believe there’s some real traction toward another significant change.

Whether those conversations continue among key decision-makers remains to be seen. While there would certainly be support to revert back to the old name in some areas of the world, other locales remain staunchly against it, and would suggest the team’s recent success is all the more reason to stick with what’s working.
