At least two NFL teams will be hiring a new head coach this offseason, as the Tennessee Titans and New York Giants have already fired Brian Callahan and Brian Daboll. Chances are, several other teams will join the Titans and Giants in their search for the next successful coach.
Yet, unlike some other teams, the Titans have known they’ll be interviewing head coaching candidates since moving on from Callahan after Week 6. Thus, the Titans may already have an idea of who they want to interview first, and they’ve already begun their research.
According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, the Titans already have Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman on their radar.
“Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman’s name has been heavily circulated in recent weeks,” Fowler wrote. “Here’s what I know. Yes, the Giants are expected to have interest in him when the carousel kicks off. But the Titans have done their research, too. And so have a few teams that will either have an opening or potentially could have one. No teams have officially requested to speak with Freeman as of the last time I checked, but if Freeman wants to at least explore the possibility of the NFL via conversations with teams, he will have opportunities to do that. Freeman will take the next few weeks to make that decision.
Remember, he has no NFL coaching experience, so if he does partake in interviews, he’ll be in a position to discover whether the nuances of the game are something he wants to entertain. I’ve talked to a few coaches with ties to Freeman who believe he will stay in college. So his name isn’t going away, but that’s the latest based on what I’ve heard.”
Freeman has led the Fighting Irish to a 38-10 record, including a 5-2 record in bowl matchups. That’s enough to deserve consideration for a jump to the NFL. Though, with the Giants, Titans, and potentially a few other teams, Freeman may have several options to pick from.
Yet, he’ll have to thrive in the interview process first, but that should be a breeze for the 39-year-old who’s been a rapid riser in the coaching industry.
