Unlike the 10 NFL teams that will have a new head coach when the 2026 season gets underway, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will still have Todd Bowles. Two teams that reached the playoffs won’t have the same head coaches next season. Meanwhile, the Buccaneers missed the postseason for the first time in Bowles’s four seasons as head coach.

Yet, like every other franchise, the Buccaneers are making changes to the coaching staff. This includes swapping last year’s offensive coordinator, Josh Grizzard, for Zac Robinson, who called plays for the Atlanta Falcons.

The offensive coordinator change may be the most significant coaching change made by the Bucs this offseason. However, they also tried to swing for the fences on another top head coaching candidate.

According to Fox Sports’ Greg Auman, the Buccaneers even spoke to former Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott about an unknown role on the staff. However, McDermott is “expected to take this year off and re-assess his options in 2027.”

Taking 2026 off and being able to pick from the best vacancies in the 2027 NFL hiring cycle has been the expectation for McDermott for nearly a week now. Yet, seeing his name resurface for a potential playoff team like the Bucs is a fascinating footnote. Perhaps he’ll even be a future head coaching candidate in Tampa Bay if the Buccaneers don’t return to the postseason next year.
