Shilo Sanders, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety and brother of Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders, ignited controversy on social media after telling award-winning reporter Mary Kay Cabot to “go make a sandwich.”

Ah, that ol’ Sanders charm shining bright once again.

The comment came in response to a social media post highlighting Cabot’s analysis of the Browns’ quarterback competition. Cabot, who has covered the team for decades and won the 2025 Bill Nunn Memorial Award, argued that Deshaun Watson — returning from a torn Achilles — should be named the starter immediately.

It’s her belief that Watson should be allowed to work with the first-team offense and “start to cook.”

“With my breaking news here that Deshaun Watson has taken the lead over Shedeur Sanders in the #Browns QB competition and has the inside track to win it, I think they should declare him QB1 asap and let the 1st team offense start to cook,” she wrote on X.

Shilo apparently didn’t agree.

Shilo’s comment quickly drew widespread criticism for its misogynistic tone, with many accusing him of undermining a respected female journalist in a male-dominated field.

“One of these folks is already honored in the Pro Football Hall of Fame,” NFL beat writer Rick Stroud countered. “The other is Shilo Sanders.”

Cabot took the high road during an appearance on a local radio show, choosing not to escalate the situation. Instead, she emphasized her role as an inspiration to young women and girls pursuing careers in sports media, highlighting her longevity and success despite the challenges she has encountered.

“I know that there are so many women who have joined the football world, especially because of some of the things that I’ve been able to do over the years, and I’m happy about that,” she said.

Sadly, this is kind of the MO when it comes to the Sanders family and the way they treat the media. You may recall Deion dumping ice water on late sports broadcaster Tim McCarver – repeatedly – when the latter criticized him for abandoning the Atlanta Braves in the middle of a playoff series to play for the Falcons.

McCarver, at the time, felt Sanders should have been focusing on the Braves’ playoff game instead of trying to make history by playing in an NFL and MLB game on the same day.

As for Cabot’s merits, the Bill Nunn Memorial Award is bestowed annually by the Professional Football Writers of America to a reporter for their “long and distinguished contribution to pro football through coverage.”

Cabot is only the second woman to have won the award. Shilo isn’t with a team right now. Maybe he should make her a sandwich.
