Klint Kubiak and the Seattle Seahawks are primed to play in Super Bowl LX against the New England Patriots. Win or lose, the Seahawks will have to find a new offensive coordinator to replace Kubiak, who’s expected to take over as the new head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders after the game.

Replacing a coordinator/playcaller is never easy, especially for a Super Bowl team led by a defensive-minded head coach. Yet, the Seahawks may already have a replacement in mind.

According to ESPN’s NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, the Seahawks could turn to former NFL QB Mike Kafka.

“Some people I’ve talked to here in San Francisco think Seattle coach Mike Macdonald will want to keep a similar, Kubiak-style system in place. One back-pocket item to store away: Seattle was very impressed with Mike Kafka during head coach interviews two years ago. He’s now a senior assistant in Detroit and could be a name to watch.”

Kafka did get hired in Detroit, but he hasn’t officially joined the team yet. If the Seahawks want him as their offensive coordinator/playcaller, he’d presumably be allowed out of whatever contract he may or may not have signed in Detroit.

He spent this past season closing out the year as the interim head coach of the New York Giants, gaining valuable experience along the way. Kafka, 38, was a popular candidate during this year’s hiring cycle, taking an interview for the Giants’ head coaching job and the Philadelphia Eagles‘ offensive coordinator job.

Now, he could land on his feet in a prominent role with the Seahawks. With another strong season, Kafka just might become a top head coaching candidate next offseason.
