Like last season, the San Francisco 49ers have dealt with injuries to some of their biggest stars, like Brock Purdy and former second-team All-Pro receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Though, unlike Purdy, who’s at least made three starts, Aiyuk has been unavailable all season.

The good news is, like Purdy, who returned to the lineup last week, Aiyuk may be ready to play too.

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network, “the belief is” that Aiyuk is nearing a return to the field.

Keep in mind, Aiyuk is working his way back through last year’s ACL tear. But the injury wasn’t just to his ACL; it also impacted other ligaments, which has complicated the 27-year-old’s recovery process.

Reports from earlier this week revealed that the 49ers have voided future guarantees in Aiyuk’s contract. It’s likely a sign that the 49ers don’t plan to carry him on the roster next season. Many expect him to simply be released at the end of the season.

Of course, it’s also possible that a strong end to his season will lead to a change of heart in San Francisco. Or maybe the bridges have been so burned that both sides have determined that it’s best to move on from one another.
