One of the NFL’s prominent insiders offers up a worrisome prediction for the New England Patriots in 2026.

The Patriots were the best story in the NFL last season. The legendary franchise has been in a steep decline over the last few years, and things hit a new low with a pair of back-to-back 4-13 seasons. It is why the organization chose to clean house and bring back Pats great Mike Vrabel to be their new head coach.

Most assumed the two-time Coach of the Year winner to make a difference eventually. However, noone expected Vrabel to turn the Patriots into title contenders in year one. After some down seasons, it sure looks like New England may be back to its dynasty days and competing for Super Bowls every year. Or maybe not.

During a recent appearance on the Ryen Russillo Show, The Athletic NFL insider Dianna Russini offered up surprising doom and gloom for the Patriots’ chances of being in title contention again in 2026.

Dianna Russini Predicts Bad Season for Patriots in 2026

“I think this is going to be a hard offseason for New England,” Russini began by saying. “Everything’s changed. This is not the cute team that maybe can get it right in a few years. They just went to the Super Bowl. Everyone thinks they’re back to the Brady days. It’s not.

“There are still so many holes on that team. I’m not trying to be negative to Patriots fans who are listening. But, I think you’d better buckle up,” she added. “I don’t think we’re going to be talking about New England winning that many games this year.

It is definitely an unexpected opinion about the team’s prospects in 2026 and suggests it was luck, smoke, and mirrors that got them to the Super Bowl last month. They will have over $40 million in cap space to fill those holes Russini talked about. Nevertheless, her projection is sure to get some wide eyes from NFL fans around the country and in New England.
