Super Bowl LX is over, which means all 32 teams will now be turning their attention to the offseason ahead. Coaching staffs are being finalized. Aside from the constant evaluation of college prospects in anticipation of the 2026 NFL Draft in April, the next step will be to make changes to the roster.

The start of the new NFL league year kicks off on March 11, when trades will be an option for teams for the first time since the 2025 trade deadline expired on Nov. 4. However, before teams get to the negotiation table, there could be a big rule change that changes the way they operate in trade discussions.

On Monday’s appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, ESPN’s NFL insider Adam Schefter revealed that teams are expected to angle to “extend the NFL trade limits from three years of (draft) picks to five years.”

As of now, teams can only offer draft selections up to three years in the future. But this change would allow teams to offer, for example, a first-round pick five years into the future.

If this potential rule proposal passes, it would increase the likelihood of trades, especially those involving big names, with some teams being willing to mortgage their future for a chance to acquire their next star. It could mean the offseason ahead could get even wackier than usual.
