Entering Sunday’s Week 14 slate, Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers had lost back-to-back games. Their season was veering out of control, and at 6-6, their postseason picture was starting to look murky.
Of course, now that the Steelers defeated the Baltimore Ravens 27-22, it buys them some breathing room, especially now that they’re in first place of the AFC South again. However, leading up to the game, there were plenty of rumors surrounding coach Tomlin’s future with the legendary franchise.
Specifically, some were asking if it’s time for Pittsburgh to consider firing Tomlin at season’s end. However, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, there is no circumstance under which Pittsburgh would fire its Super Bowl-winning head coach.
Yet, that doesn’t mean his place with the franchise is secure for long. While Tomlin is under contract in Pittsburgh for 2026, the Steelers have to decide whether they want to keep Tomlin for 2027 by March 1.
That gives the Steelers plenty of time to sit down with their top decision-makers to determine whether they wish to move forward with Tomlin for two more seasons.
Of course, they could use that time to entertain trade offers for the likely future Hall of Famer too. Though it should be noted that Tomlin has a full no-trade clause in his contract, meaning he’d have the right to approve or veto any trade offer on the table.
Still, teams looking to hire a new head coach this offseason will surely like the 19 seasons of NFL head coaching experience Tomlin brings to the table. Thus, the Tomlin rumors won’t be ending any time soon.
