The Pittsburgh Steelers were extremely patient when it came to waiting for their starting quarterback last offseason. They didn’t get Aaron Rodgers under contract until June 6, roughly a month before their training camp got underway.
Yet, Rodgers only agreed to a one-year contract, worth $13.65 million. Now, Rodgers’ contract is set to expire. That is, unless the Steelers plan on working out an extension with the 42-year-old QB first.
According to Steelers owner Art Rooney II, Pittsburgh will make a decision on Rodgers at some point in the “next month or so.” Since NFL free agency won’t begin until March, that gives the Steelers and Rodgers plenty of time to reach a conclusion on their future.
However, with his former Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy just getting hired by the Steelers, it would seemingly increase Rodgers’ chances of returning for another season. Of course, the Steelers could make other plans.
Either way, the Steelers are likely to at least slightly revamp their QB room for 2026. Right now, the only QBs under contract in Pittsburgh are Mason Rudolph and 2025 sixth-round pick Will Howard. It’s possible Rodgers will re-join them too.
Rodgers didn’t have an extraordinary season in his first year in Pittsburgh. He did, however, lead them back to the playoffs. With the former Super Bowl-winning head coach McCarthy now aboard for 2026, another postseason appearance could be in the cards next season too, but Rodgers would certainly help steady the ship in a year of change.
