The Pittsburgh Steelers may have a new head coach, but that hasn’t changed their approach at quarterback. Just like last year, the team continues to wait on future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers. Last year, they waited very patiently through the 2025 NFL Draft. Rodgers didn’t sign a contract until June. This time, the team wants an answer sooner.

However, if the Steelers get a response from Rodgers indicating that he’s retiring after 21 NFL seasons, then what? Some believe the Steelers would simply pivot to another former Pro Bowl quarterback.

Recently, Sports Illustrated‘s Albert Breer indicated that the Steelers could simply decide to sign Kirk Cousins instead.

“If the answer is no, then the Steelers could turn to Kirk Cousins,” Breer wrote. “But for now, their inaction is a decent signal that they’re comfortable with where things stand.”

Cousins remains available in free agency after the Falcons cut him loose after just two years of what was a four-year, $160 million contract. He started 22 games for the team in that span, leading them to a 12-10 record.

The four-time Pro Bowler wants to play, which could be why, like Rodgers, he’s taking his sweet time to find the right opportunity. Arizona also has a starting job available, but internal candidate Jacoby Brissett may have the fast track toward winning the job after a career year. Thus, if Rodgers does call it quits, the Steelers would easily present the best opportunity for Cousins in 2026.
