The Philadelphia Eagles have never been afraid to make changes, even when they involve big names, Pro Bowl talents, or even All-Pros. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman always does what he feels gives his team the best chance to win a Super Bowl, no matter what.
This offseason, much of the focus has centered around potentially trading Pro Bowl receiver A.J. Brown. A trade may or may not still materialize, but now the talk is pointed at another Eagles Pro Bowler.
Specifically, the Eagles seem to be seriously considering making a kicker change, where Jake Elliott has held down the starting job since 2017. Elliott has become a one-time Pro Bowler, and he’s helped the Eagles win a Super Bowl ring.
But now he’s 31 and his accuracy has dropped significantly in the past two seasons. In 2023, Elliott drilled 93.8% of his field goals. In 2024, that number dropped down to 77.8%. Last year, it fell even further to 74.1%. Now, the Eagles may be ready to give up on him altogether.
According to Commanding the Huddle’s Ryan Fowler, the Eagles, Commanders, Falcons, and 49ers have all shown “extensive interest” in kicker prospect Ethan Sanchez from Houston.
The Eagles have already conducted an hour-long phone call with Sanchez. Which makes us wonder, how teams can talk to a kicker for a whole hour, but that’s besides the point. Philadelphia also met with Sanchez privately after his Houston Pro Day.
Sanchez is coming off a season in which he finished as the runner-up to win the Lou Groza Award, given to college football’s top kicker. He made 20-of-25 field goals last season, and didn’t miss any of his 38 extra point attempts.
Elliott signed a four-year, $24 million contract extension with the Eagles in 2024. He still has three years remaining on that contract and has a $4.6 million cap hit for 2026. Yet, the Eagles are clearly identifying other, less expensive options in the 2026 NFL Draft, where they have a total of nine selections.
