The New England Patriots were active on the first day of 2026 NFL free agency. New England agreed to a deal with former Baltimore Ravens EDGE rusher Dre’Mont Jones in the first moments of free agency, following it up with fullback Reggie Gilliam a few hours later. Then, before the clock struck midnight, the Patriots agreed to terms with left guard Alijah Vera-Tucker on a three-year deal.
New England is still entering the second day of free agency with several needs. Below, we dive into the five best players for the Patriots to target after the first wave of free agency!
Romeo Doubs, wide receiver

Romeo Doubs is the best wide receiver available in free agency after the first day. Doubs would slot in as New England’s current top wide receiver; however, it would be better if he ended up as the WR2 in the offense. The former Green Bay Packer would be a good fit with the Patriots, and likely command around $12 to 15 million on a multi-year deal.
Jaylinn Hawkins, safety

Jaylinn Hawkins improved with the Patriots during the 2025-26 NFL season, and he should be one of the top priorities remaining. Hawkins would fill the need at safety next to Craig Woodson, giving New England continuity moving forward. The 28-year-old safety is projected to earn around $6 to 8 million over two to three years.
Jauan Jennings, wide receiver

Jauan Jennings is a very intriguing option for the Patriots. Jennings, who served as one of the top wide receivers for the San Francisco 49ers, can play in the slot and outside. The 28-year-old wide receiver would start out as the top target in New England. Jennings should receive a similar deal as Doubs, which could be around $12 to 15 million.
Leo Chenal, linebacker

Leo Chenal is a versatile linebacker who would fit really well into Mike Vrabel’s defense. Chanel can play on the edge and in the interior, while rushing the passer, defending the run, and dropping into coverage. The 25-year-old linebacker would be an excellent do-it-all player that Vrabel loves on defense. Chenal should command around $8 to 10 million on a multi-year deal.
Chig Okonkwo, tight end

Chig Okonkwo is the best tight end left on the board and has a connection with Vrabel. Okonkwo has great athleticism at a position of need for the Patriots, producing yards after the catch as a vertical threat in the passing game. The 26-year-old tight end isn’t a great blocker, but New England would sign him for his receiving ability. Okonkwo should command $10 to 14 million on a multi-year deal.
