Week 1 status: doubtful? Patrick Mahomes is officially back at Arrowhead, and Chiefs Kingdom can finally exhale. THIS IS NOT A DRILL.
After weeks of uncertainty following knee surgery, the Kansas City Chiefs’ QB1 was spotted at OTAs, taking another major step in his comeback journey. Head coach Andy Reid had previously stressed the need to play it safe and avoid any setbacks with Mahomes’ recovery. But now? The vibes in Kansas City are shifting fast.
The Chiefs later confirmed Mahomes would participate in practice, and seeing No. 15 back on the field instantly sent the fanbase into playoff-mode optimism. He may still be in the final stretch of rehab, but Mahomes already looks locked in for another run at reclaiming the AFC throne. If Kansas City wants to get back to ruling the league in 2026, it all starts with their franchise signal-caller. And right now, Patrick Mahomes looks well on his way to being ready for kickoff season.
Chiefs Fans Fired Up After Patrick Mahomes Returns to Arrowhead

Back in January, Patrick Mahomes made it clear: his target has always been Week 1 of the 2026 season. And right now, Chiefs Kingdom has every reason to believe QB1 is full steam ahead.
Mahomes got fans buzzing on Tuesday after the Chiefs took to X, posting Mahomes slinging passes during OTAs, instantly sending NFL Twitter into meltdown mode. Adam Schefter amplified the hype by reposting the footage on X, adding even more fuel to the comeback chatter around Kansas City.
Then came another major update from ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler, who revealed just how intense Mahomes’ rehab grind has been since the Chiefs entered Phase Three of OTAs.
“He is ahead of schedule,” Fowler said. “A source told me he’s been rehabbing like a maniac in Kansas City. Usually he spends parts of the offseason in Texas working with receivers or back home, but this time he’s mostly stayed in KC to lock into rehab. We’re talking six to seven hours a day.”
That’s exactly the kind of update Chiefs fans wanted to hear after Mahomes’ brutal ACL injury ended his 2025 season in Week 15. The arm strength appears to be there already. Now, the next checkpoint is getting that trademark Mahomes mobility fully back online.
“The next step is the cutting part,” Fowler added. “That’s where he has to get comfortable. He’s been throwing for about a month now, but cutting and moving naturally again is the big hurdle.”
Kansas City enters 2026 with plenty of motivation after last season’s disappointing finish. The front office has already been aggressive this offseason, adding another first-round pick and retooling the offensive line to better protect their franchise superstar.
Now all eyes are on training camp. If Mahomes looks smooth planting, cutting, and escaping pressure by late summer, the rest of the AFC might officially be on notice again.
