A huge new report has offered up a boatload of details on the New York Giants‘ search for their next head coach.
In November, the Giants did something they always try to avoid: The rash decision to fire a head coach during the season. But former head coach Brian Daboll gave management no choice. After a pair of losing seasons, he began 2025 by starting 2-8 and blowing sizable fourth-quarter leads on multiple occasions.
Now, they are deep in their search for his replacement. Since they moved on from franchise legend Tom Coughlin in 2015, the team has had six different men be head coach. The organization is hoping they can once and for all find a person who can hold on to the job for more than three years. And despite being an equal part of the mess over the last few seasons, general manager Joe Schoen isn’t going anywhere.
According to ESPN’s Jordan Raanan, “Multiple sources who spoke with the Giants about potential candidates came away from recent conversations believing that Schoen ‘is coming back’ as the general manager despite a 6-27 record over the past two seasons.”
The NY Giants insider also claims that the organization is casting a very wide net in their search, and “There is no mandate on the search needing to focus on an offensive or defensive coach, or someone who has head coaching experience.”
Mike McCarthy and Antonio Pierce in Running for the NY Giants Job

Raanan reports that the group that has compiled the candidate list for the NY Giants head coach job is led by Schoen and includes members of his inner circle and front office. The final list, which has allegedly been submitted to ownership, was put together after the group “did the groundwork by calling around the league for background on candidates, getting recommendations, and doing homework on different types and styles of coaches.”
So, who are the names on the candidate list? Well, it includes a former Super Bowl-winning coach and, surprisingly, a former star and member of their 2008 Super Bowl team.
That group includes former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy, Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo, former Las Vegas Raiders coach and Giants great player Antonio Pierce, Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula, and interim HC Mike Kafka will also be interviewed.
