EXCLUSIVE: Interview with New York Giants GM Joe Schoen
New York Giants General Manager Joe Schoen joins Rich 'Big Daddy' Salgado to discuss his career in the NFL, how he got his start, and how the New York Giants season is going so far.

The New York Giants and general manager Joe Schoen agreed to a multi-year extension on Thursday evening. The exact length of the extension hasn’t been revealed yet, but despite the team going 7-27 in the last two seasons, the 46-year-old Schoen is no longer a lame duck GM.

Perhaps the biggest reason why ownership gave Schoen an extension is due to the fact that he and head coach John Harbaugh have gotten along. There was speculation outside the organization that the two would have friction since Harbaugh wanted to have input on the roster. But both have stated numerous times that they have a good working relationship, and that was evident at the Town Hall this week.

Another reason for extending their GM is because the team has been one of the biggest winners this offseason. They made significant upgrades in free agency by acquiring Isaiah Likely, Darnell Mooney, Jordan Stout, and Patrick Ricard. Then got two of the best players in the draft in Arvell Reese and Francis Mauigoa, and possibly have a new starting corner in second round pick Colton Hood.

However, despite the optimism surrounding the new players, it’s hard to ignore Schoen’s abysmal 22-45-1 record in his tenure with Big Blue. But for whatever reason, ownership believes the team’s struggles were due to poor coaching by former head coach Brian Daboll and not the talent on the roster.

We’ll see how Schoen and the team fare now that they’re being led by a Super Bowl-winning head coach. If the results remain the same as in the previous season, Schoen’s seat will go from cold to hot in the blink of an eye.
