North Carolina Tar Heels head coach Bill Belichick had a clause in his contract that would make it easier for him to jump into the NFL coaching carousel if the right job became available. After the Buffalo Bills fired Sean McDermott, observers wondered if the opportunity to coach MVP quarterback Josh Allen and a Super Bowl contender would get Belichick back into the NFL.
According to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Bills have zero interest in interviewing Belichick even amid a wide net being cast in their coaching search to find the right leader to get this team over the hump in the playoffs. It would indicate there was minimal to no interest in Belichick in a historic coaching carousel that many around the league viewed as having a weaker pool of coordinator candidates.

There were 10 NFL head-coaching vacancies this offseason, tying a record. Since being fired by the New England Patriots following the 2023 season, Belichick has been brought in for just one interview—with the Atlanta Falcons—and half the league has shown no interest in him when pursuing a new head coach.
That’s highly unlikely to change following the on-field results in 2025. Under Mike Vrabel, the Patriots are AFC champions and have the core in place to be perennial contenders. Meanwhile, North Carolina went 4-8 a season after it fired Mack Brown for going 6-6.

There are also other issues likely keeping Belichick out of the NFL. Jordon Hudson, his girlfriend, has created a media spectacle, and franchises do not want any additional distractions. In addition, Belichick has proven far too loyal to his longtime assistants and has been adamant about doing things his way. NFL front offices are not willing to overhaul everything for a head coach who went 12-22 in his final two seasons and seems to have lost his touch for keeping an organization focused on football, evaluating talent and delivering a great on-field product that competes for championships.
