In the past, NFL teams could interview potential head coaching candidates for current vacancies once the regular season ends, even if that coach’s team is still in the playoffs.

But on Tuesday, the NFL changed the head coach hiring process, banning in-person coaching interviews until after the Divisional Round of the playoffs is over.

As to how close the vote was? Not close at all. All 32 teams voted in favor of the new rule change.

The issue before was some teams and coaches felt interviewing for the biggest opportunity of their careers during a playoff run was far too distracting. By not being able to put their full attention on preparing for their next opponent in an elimination game, coaches were instead trying to make sure they were ready for a chance to be an NFL head coach. It’s not an ideal mix.

Waiting until after the Divisional Round is a good move, but how long until the NFL delays it another week, forcing teams to wait until after the Conference Championship, when there’s a one-week rest period before the Super Bowl kicks off?

Either way, not coaching candidates will have a bit more time to get all their ducks in a row, which also gives teams another week to make sure they’re ready for the next big organizational decision too.
