When the regular season ended, the New York Jets moved on from several coaches from Aaron Glenn’s staff. Many of these coaches worked on the defensive side of the ball. However, the Jets also revealed that Glenn’s offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand was being demoted to a lesser role that had yet to be announced.
The plan was to re-assign Engstrand to a different position while bringing in a new offensive playcaller who may also retain offensive coordinator duties. Now that plan has changed.
On Tuesday, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport revealed that the Jets have ultimately decided to cut ties with Engstrand altogether. Mike Garafolo, also of NFL Network, revealed that Glenn and Engstrand held many conversations about his potential role in 2026. Yet, after doing so, the Jets determined that moving on from Engstrand was in their best interest.
Thus, now the Jets officially have an offensive coordinator vacancy. Though, they’ve technically been searching for a new offensive coordinator/playcaller since the season ended.
With no defined starting quarterback on the roster, the Jets may have a tough time recruiting the top candidates available. But it’s not like they don’t have intriguing pieces to work with, including Garrett Wilson and Mason Taylor.
The Jets may even already be on the verge of making their next hire, which could be part of the reason why Engstrand was suddenly let go instead of given another role on the offense.
