The NFL offseason is gaining steam, and Breece Hall’s free agency landing spot will be one of the top topics in discussion as the March 9 negotiation window approaches. Several impact running backs have expiring contracts, including Super Bowl LX MVP Kenneth Walker III, Travis Etienne, and Rachaad White.

Hall and Etienne have long been the subject of trade rumors, but unlike Etienne, Hall has never had the chance to play for a playoff team. The 24-year-old is also coming off a career-high 1,065 rushing yards. Now, after four seasons in New York, where he ran for 3,398 yards and picked up 1,648 yards as a receiver, Hall can control his own destiny as a free agent.

However, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk, the Jets could opt to use the “little-used” transition tag.

“There’s a current belief in league circles that the Jets eventually will apply the transition tag,” Florio wrote. “The 2026 transition tag for running backs is expected to land in the range of $11.5 million to $11.9 million. If accepted, it becomes fully guaranteed — and it puts the player under contract for the coming year.”

If applied, the tag gives the Jets a chance to match any contract offer Hall receives. However, if Hall decides to sign elsewhere, the Jets won’t get any draft pick compensation in return, nor would his loss factor into the compensatory pick formula for 2027.

The transition tag can be rescinded later, should the Jets catch wind that Hall is plotting to leave, no matter what the Jets are willing to pay. As Florio notes, Hall is expected to have a “robust market” as a free agent.
