A new report on the New York Jets’ “preferred” quarterback target this month is sure to get a sigh and eye roll from Gang Green fans.
Following a disastrous 3-14 finish to the 2025 season, the NY Jets need to make a lot of upgrades to their roster in the months ahead. However, the position they most need to find a fix for is at quarterback, after last year’s biggest free agent signing, Justin Fields, was a massive disappointment as their starter.
The NY Jets are set to have the fourth most cap space in the NFL this offseason. So, fans are expecting the team to add a good veteran QB to lead the offense next season. On Friday, SNY NFL insider Connor Hughes revealed that the organization is interested in the best signal caller on the current market, two-time Pro Bowler Kyler Murray.
However, sources have informed Hughes that they believe the former Arizona Cardinals starting QB intends to take his talents to the Minnesota Vikings. Interestingly enough, former NY Jets second-round pick Geno Smith is also on the team’s radar after he was released by the Las Vegas Raiders this week. But it seems that new offensive coordinator Frank Reich prefers a different player.
Frank Reich wants the NY Jets to sign Carson Wentz

“Carson Wentz, two sources told SNY, is believed to be Reich’s preferred option,” Hughes writes. “The two have a longstanding relationship dating back to Reich’s time as Wentz’s offensive coordinator in Philadelphia from 2016-17.
“Wentz’s best season came under Reich in Year 2, when he went 11-2 and threw for 3,296 yards with 33 touchdowns and seven interceptions. An MVP frontrunner, Wentz tore his ACL against the Rams in Week 13.”
While the second overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft did have his lone Pro Bowl season with Reich, that was nearly a decade ago. Since then, Wentz has gotten the chance to start with three different organizations and has failed every time.
While the success of Sam Darnold and Daniel Jones over the last couple of seasons shows certain QBs do need more time to develop, at 33, you can bet many NY Jets fans will not be thrilled by the idea of Wentz being their starting QB in 2026.
