New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo impressed in his rookie season, recording 617 scrimmage yards and seven total touchdowns before suffering a season-ending injury. Fortunately for New York, there’s promising news on his return to the field.
Speaking to reporters, Skattebo said that he’s still a “little ways out” and the mental side of the rehab has been the biggest challenge, but he will be on the field in Week 1.
“Obviously there’s ups and downs in the injury process and coming back and rehabbing, but the mental battle has been the hardest part: making sure that I trust it fully,” Skattebo said. “I’m a little ways out. Not too far, but I’ll be ready to go. Week 1, I’ll be ready to go.”

Taken with the 104th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, Skattebo impressed from the jump. From Weeks 2–7, the Giants running back averaged 66.8 rushing yards per game and 4.2 yards per carry, with six total touchdowns.
On Oct. 26 against the Philadelphia Eagles, Skattebo suffered a dislocated ankle that required season-ending surgery. Fast forward to March, and he had worked his way up to jogging speed.
There had been speculation in the weeks leading up to the 2026 NFL Draft that New York would use the fifth overall pick on running back Jeremiyah Love. However, he was selected third overall, and the Giants didn’t use a single 2026 draft selection on a running back.
That suggests the new Giants coaching staff has a lot of confidence in Skattebo, even coming off an injury. While he figures to once again split touches with Tyrone Tracy Jr., it appears the Giants’ offense will be healthy when Week 1 rolls around.
