The New England Patriots almost had everything they needed to win Super Bowl LX, but ultimately wound up a bit short. Patriots general manager Eliot Wolf has been busy addressing the team’s biggest weaknesses ever since. But building a roster is complicated. Teams can’t just constantly add to the equation without taking something out.
While many may want the Patriots to largely run it back with the same core group of players (with additions mixed in), some athletes won’t get the opportunity to return. One Patriots player found that out the hard way on Monday morning.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Patriots have released backup quarterback Joshua Dobbs from the roster. The Patriots had been attempting to trade the 31-year-old QB, but decided to cut him after finding no takers.
New England recently negotiated a two-year, $4.4 million contract with former undrafted QB Tommy DeVito. That’s when the writing was on the wall for Dobbs, but as mentioned, New England held out hope that a trade partner would emerge.
Nevertheless, the Patriots are left with just Drake Maye and DeVito on the QB depth chart. They’ll undoubtedly add another arm this offseason. Perhaps even another veteran.
Meanwhile, Dobbs, who has one of the NFL’s best nicknames (‘The Passtronaut’), will have to take his aeronautical background elsewhere. Yet, it shouldn’t be tough for the dual-threat QB to find another opportunity, as teams always value bright QBs with mobility.
